Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, is a devastating neuromuscular disease. It is also called motor neuron disease or Lou Gehrig’s disease after the legendary New York Yankees first baseman that lost his battlewith ALS at the age of 38. ALS causes the progressive degeneration and eventual death of the nerve cells that control movement. Eventually, many are completely paralyzed, unable to speak, swallow and ultimately breathe. ALS can strike anyone, male or female, of any age or ethnicity.

ALS is devastating emotionally, physically and financially. After diagnosis, 80% of those living with ALS die in two to five years. Everyday two to three Canadians are diagnosed with ALS.

Since 2001, the goal of the regional managers of ALS Canada has been to support as many individuals and families affected by ALS in Ontario as possible. The WALK for ALS provides direct benefits to the clients that we are privileged to serve and fund crucial research.

As one of seven Regional Managers for ALS Canada,  Brigitte Labby travels across north-eastern Ontario supporting over 65 individuals/families currently living with ALS, sadly as young as 30.

Over 1200 people across Ontario are battling this disease today. We need everyone’s help

There is no cure ….YET, but with your help we can get closer.

Your financial commitment enables individuals living with ALS in Ontario to obtain assistive devices, including wheelchairs and communication devices, home visits and assistance in facilitating health care within the community. Currently, funds raised at our WALKs provide services to approximately 800 Ontarians and their families living with ALS. The funds from the WALKs also support our mission towards finding a cure for ALS through our world-renowned ALS research initiatives.

You can be a part of making our goals a reality. ALS Canada is proudly hosting the 13th annual WALK for ALS with a provincial goal of $1.775 million. In 2013, the event raised more than $1.5 million and reached more than 5,000 people giving our corporate supporters a wonderful opportunity to get the word out about their products and services.

The Walk for ALS is on Saturday, September 13th in Timmins this year. Yes, you are getting plenty of notice but organizations like ALS Canada need help year round.

Call Brigitte Labby at 1-800-267-4257 ext 208 to learn more on how you can help.
