A radiothon boosting the emergency department more than doubled its goal.

The KiSS Minutes Matter Radiothon held March 22 raised more than $52,000 for the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation.

“We had visions of about $15,000, maybe $20,000, but then we doubled that total thanks to the generosity here in the city,” said Mark Kinsman, KiSS 99.3 morning show host.

Running from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Kinsman said the radiothon was a truly magical day sharing stories from local doctors, nurses and people who have used the emergency department.

There were business challenges throughout the day, as well as donors small and large, along with support from cities along the Highway 11 corridor that benefit from the regional hospital.

“All those donations right down to the gentleman who stopped in to toss toonies at us, it all adds up and it added up to more than $52,000 for Kim Basinet and her ER department,” he said.

The ER is facing several issues.

Because there are limited beds, admitted patients stay in the emergency department longer. While the organization is working towards a new department, they are fundraising for renovations to create better efficiences and more storage in the meanwhile.
