MATHESON - Northern College, in partnership with Primero Mining Corporation and Wahgoshig First Nation, is preparing to host the second intake of its Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core program tailored to Indigenous learners.
The 14-week program will be delivered onsite at Primero’s Black Fox Complex, with curriculum and instructors provided by Northern College.
Full funding for six students is being provided by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure’s Aboriginal Economic Development Fund.
“We are very fortunate to be able to offer another intake of this innovative training opportunity for local Indigenous learners,” says Christine Heavens, Executive Director, Community, Business Development and Employment Services at Northern College. “Our partnership with Primero and Wahgoshig First Nation reflects our commitment to providing innovative education and training opportunities for Indigenous learners.”
The program is being offered tuition free, thanks to funding provided by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure’s Aboriginal Economic Development Fund.
Daily transportation to the training site from Wahgoshig, as well as additional student support, will be provided by Wahgoshig First Nation.
Indigenous learners interested in taking this program are invited to attend one of two information sessions being held on Wednesday, October 14, 2015.
The first session will be held at Northern’s Timmins Campus from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the second session will be held at the Wahgoshig Community Centre from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
