NEWS RELEASE

TIMMINS POLICE SERVICE

***************************
Over the weekend, Timmins Police officers responded to more than 200 calls, which included alarm calls, assault calls, noise complaints, domestic disputes, mischief, police assistance, and calls related to Liquor License Act issues.

Police also dealt with close to 50 traffic related incidents, including traffic enforcement and 23 reported motor vehicle collisions.

With the recent extreme cold temperatures, the Timmins Police Service has seen an increase in collisions, and would like to remind drivers that the best practice in winter conditions is to lower driving speeds.

In cold weather, snow on roads can become hard packed and slippery.

Police are reminding drivers that one area in particular where extra caution is required is Highway 101 E (Rae Hill).

Even though roads may not appear icy, roads can become frozen and slick in extreme cold temperatures.

In the past, police have noted drivers on this stretch of road attempting to maintain speeds as they navigate the hill, and losing control when traction is lost.

Please use caution and lower speeds in this area.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were sustained as a result of the weekend’s collisions.

In addition to lowering speeds, drivers are encouraged to remove all snow and ice from vehicles to ensure visibility and refrain from using cruise control in winter months when driving conditions may not be consistent.
