Police lay charge following third false report

A Timmins resident now faces a charge of public mischief following a report of a suspicious person.

On October 8, the 18-year-old female reported that a male attempted to lure her into his vehicle.

Upon reviewing video surveillance of the area, police determined this incident did not occur.

The accused then recanted her statement.

The 18 year-old female was charged with public mischief contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

Due to the sensitive nature of the incident, her name is not being released.

This incident follows two additional unsubstantiated reports of a suspicious male on October 6 and 7, in which complainants claimed a male followed them and offered them rides.

In these incidents, the complainants also recanted their statements.

The original suspicious person report, which occurred on October 3, 2014, remains under investigation by the Timmins Police Service.

In this incident, a female reported being offered a ride by a Caucasian male, approximately 30 years old, with thick hair and facial hair, driving a four door-sedan, silver in colour with tinted windows.

Police are still looking to speak to this driver, and anyone having any information is asked to call the Timmins Police Service at 705-264-1201.

The Timmins Police Service takes reports of this nature very seriously, and investigates each one fully.

Opening an investigation involves assigning officers and resources.

The public is reminded that making false allegations is a criminal offense, and could lead to charges.
