Police investigating fatal mine site accident

One man is dead as a result of an accident on the surface of the Holt Mining Project located approximately 60 kilometers east of Matheson on Highway 101, near the Quebec border.

One man is dead as a result of an accident on the surface of the Holt Mining Project located approximately 60 kilometers east of Matheson on Highway 101, near the Quebec border.

Members of the Matheson Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment and the South Porcupine Forensic Identification Unit are working in conjunction with the Ministry of Labour to investigate the circumstances of the accident at the mine, which is an operation of St Andrews Gold Ltd.

OPP Constable Marc Depatie, community service officer and media liaison at the South Porcupine detachment said the investigation into the accident is in its early stages and no details about accident would be released at this time.

He said the accident on surface at the mine occurred at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

The OPP will be holding the scene, which will be released to St. Andrews Gold when investigations at the scene are completed, said Depatie.

The name of the deceased man will not be released until notifications to next of kin are completed.

Depatie said the Coroner’s Office has been notified of the event as well and may become involved in the investigation at some point.

A post mortem examination is likely to take place in the due course of the investigation.
