Operation Impact 2019, a national public awareness campaign aimed at making Canada's roads the safer was undertaken in the Timmins area by the Timmins Police Service The campaign was focused on promoting safe driving behaviours, and to help prevent collisions on Timmins and area roads.

The results are encouraging as no Impaired Driving or Stunt Driving occurrences were observed or detected by the Timmins Police Service - Traffic Section or platoon officers.

That said, a total of 15 speeding violations resulted in Offence Notices being issued, with another 3 Highway Traffic Act violations resulting in corrective enforcement action taking place.

No seatbelt infractions were noted during the campaign which ran from Oct. 11 until Oct. 14 which the Timmins Police view as encouraging.

One motorist was observed using their cellphone while at the wheel which meets the definition of distracted driving; the applicable charge was laid against the motorist.

Overall, the campaign has resulted in statistical results that are encouraging in terms of roadway safety. The focus was on behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users at risk: impaired driving due to alcohol, drugs or fatigue, as well as aggressive driving, distracted driving and lack of seat belt use.

It is apparent that traffic enforcement initiatives such as Operation Impact are effective in raising awareness that leads to safer driving behaviours taking hold in our area.
