A peaceful demonstration is showing solidarity for Wet'suwet'en.

The Timmins rally is Saturday, Feb. 29 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Canadian Tire gas bar/Home Depot.

“The issue with Wet’suwet’en, them trying to protect their lands and trying to get their (land) rights recognized...it affects us here, it affects the Indigenous nations all over Canada," explained Jennifer Wabano, one of the organizers.

The event will feature speakers, including Nishnawbe Aski Nation deputy grand chief Walter Naveau of Mattagami First Nation, and drumming

Wabano said everyone is welcome to participate.

“It is a peaceful demonstration, we did put word out that we are asking people not to retaliate if they encounter racism or any kind of negativity from passing vehicles," she said.

"We just want to demonstrate that it is a solidarity gathering in support Wet'suwet'en and in support of their laws and Indigenous laws because whatever happens there will affect us."

Traffic in the west end of Timmins will be impacted by the rally.

According to Timmins Police, Riverside Drive between Government Road and Jaguar Drive will be reduced to two lanes of traffic (one eastbound and one westbound) Feb. 29 from noon to 4 p.m.

"During this time traffic may become congested, so motorists are advised to adjust their speed and attention accordingly to ensure road safety. There will be a noticeable increase in pedestrian traffic along or close to this roadway so please be aware. Members of the Timmins Police Service will be in the area to monitor traffic conditions," reads the advisory.
