Parking fines have officially jumped in Timmins.

Effective today, people receiving a parking ticket will be paying more.

If a ticket is paid within five days the price has increased to $16 from $8. After that, the new fine is $20 instead of $12.

"Previously, Timmins had some of the lowest rates in Northern Ontario and we wanted to be more on par with other municipalities. The rate also had not been updated since 2014 and we felt that it was time to revisit those fees," said Steph Palmateer, city clerk, in a news release.

The price for a parking pass also went up this year.

A 30-day pass is now $50 plus HST, which is an increase of $5 over the past price.

The fee changes were approved by council last year.
