Over 31K people in the region are fully vaccinated: report

In the past week, 44 previously reported cases have screened for variants of concern in the Porcupine Health Unit region. 

As of  June 28, there have now been 1,079 cases in the region where a variant of concern has been detected, according to this week's epidemiology report. To date, there have been 33 confirmed cases of the highly contagious delta B.1.617.2 variant of concern — 31 in Timmins, one in Iroquois Falls and one in Smooth Rock Falls.

Since last week's report, 7,218 more people have been fully vaccinated, bringing the total number of people with both doses of the vaccine to 31,322. According to Stats Canada, in 2016 the population of the health unit region was 84,201.

There has been an increase of 516 people who received their first dose, bringing the total number of people who have received their first dose of the vaccine to 47,797. There have been 79,119 doses of the vaccine administered. These do not include the totals from Operation Immunity on the James Bay coast.

When the numbers were pulled for the report on June 28, there had been 2,053 confirmed cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic, an increase of 74 from last week's update. That's a drop in the number of weekly cases, as last week's report went up by 93. The week prior to that, 236 cases were reported.

Of the confirmed cases, 51 per cent are male and 47.7 per cent are female. The gender is missing for 1.3 per cent of cases, and the gender for one case is identified as other.

People 20 to 39 years make up the largest number of cases, with 731 people (35.6 per cent of all cases) being in that demographic. There have been 676  cases (32.9 per cent) in people ages 19 and under, 409 people (19.9 per cent of cases) between the ages of 40-59, 179 people 8.7 per cent) are between the ages of 60-79, and 58 people (2.8 per cent) are 80 and over.

For where people are located, 966  cases have been in Timmins; 258 in the area Matheson, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls; 104 in the Kapuskasing area; 97 in the Hearst, Hornepayne area; 620 in the James and Hudson Bay region; and eight are out of region.

Of the confirmed cases, 1,207 (58.8 per cent) were contacts of a case, the exposure of 87 (4.2 per cent) is under investigation, there is no known exposure for 472 (23 per cent), 269 (13.1 per cent) are associated to an outbreak, and 18 cases are travel-related.

The case fatality rate in the Porcupine Health Unit region is 1.4 per cent. The provincial rate is 1.7 per cent.

The test positivity rate for the region at the time of the report was 1.9 per cent. In Northern Ontario the positivity rate, according to the report, is 1 per cent and the provincial rate is 3.4 per cent.
