KIRKLAND LAKE - The Civic Holiday long weekend is one of the busiest long weekends of the year. Once again, members of the Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be busy patrolling local roads, waterways and towns.

This year from Friday, Aug. 3 to Monday, Aug. 6, 2018 officers will be enforcing the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) with a focus on, "Move Over for Emergency Vehicles". Police, fire and ambulance respond to emergency calls daily and drivers need to do their part to assist emergency workers in getting to their destinations.

Slow down and move over if you see an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing. If the emergency vehicle is stopped on the side of the road as you are travelling, slow down, move over safely and pass with caution. If the road has two or more lanes, leave a lane between you and the emergency vehicle when safe to do so.

Drivers could face fines of $400 to $2,000 and three demerit points on conviction if they don't slow down and move over. There is also the possibility that a driver's licence suspension for up to two years may be issued.

The Kirkland Lake OPP Detachment Commander, Staff Sergeant Joel Breault, would like to encourage everyone to have a safe holiday weekend.

"OPP officers from across the Province, including the Kirkland Lake Detachment, will be out patrolling our roads, waterways and trails this long weekend. We will be focusing not only on the Move over law, but will be out enforcing the Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act in a concerted effort to keep emergency responders, residents of Ontario and tourists safe."
