EXPLOSIVE CARGO RESULTS IN HIGHWAY CLOSURE 

(COCHRANE, ON) –On January 10, 2014, at approximately 2:30 pm, the Cochrane Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call of a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 652, 128 kilometers north east of Cochrane. The information provided to police indicated that a commercial motor vehicle carrying mining explosives had struck the ditch while on its way to Detour Gold Mine site but was not posing a safety concern as the explosive cargo had been deemed secure by mining and explosives authorities at the scene.

As precautionary measure, the OPP shut down Highway 652 in order to ensure public safety and to maintain a safe perimeter from the collision site.

The police investigation revealed that prior to the collision; the involved commercial motor vehicle lost control, skidded off the highway and came to a rest upright in the ditch snow embankment. There were no injuries as a result of the collision.

The highway has been reopened following the safe removal of the explosive cargo.

Investigation is ongoing.

 

OPP INVESTIGATE COCHRANE WASTE PLANT BREAK AND ENTER 

(COCHRANE, ON) -On February 6, 2014, the Cochrane Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the report of a break and enter event that occurred on Water Plant Road in the town of Cochrane.

The police investigation revealed that between 3:00 pm on February 5 and 8:00 am on February 6, 2014, suspect(s) broke into the waste management building and vandalized the interior before leaving on foot. Further police investigation determined that the incident was isolated to the waste management building and that other adjacent buildings on the property had not been accessed.

The OPP is asking for anyone with relevant information or who may have been in the Water Plant Road area at the time in question, to call the Cochrane OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

MAN ARRESTED FOR DISCHARGING FIREARM INTO MOVING VEHICLE 

(COCHRANE, ON) – On January 31, 2014, the Cochrane Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid several weapons related charges against a Brower Township man.

The police investigation revealed that in the late afternoon hours of December 31, 2014, an enraged male discharged his rifle into a moving vehicle on Highway 574, as a result of a verbal dispute. Police confirmed that the involved vehicle occupants had not sustained any injuries during the event and subsequently attended the scene where they arrested the accused male without incident.

As a result of the investigation, 59 year old Malcolm STANSFIELD of Brower Township, Ontario has been arrested and charged with seven counts of firearms related offences and one count of Mischief under $5000, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused male is presently in custody and will be scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane at a later date to answer to his charges.

 

INVESTIGATION LEADS TO WEAPON CHARGES

(KIRKLAND LAKE, ON.) – Members of the Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a youth with several criminal offences. The charges stem from the investigation into a person reported in attendance at a hockey game at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex located on Allen Avenue was in possession of a weapon. Subsequently seized as a result of the investigation was an air pistol and cocaine. The accused was arrested at the scene without incident. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on February 7, 2014.

The youth has been charged with Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Threatening and Trafficking in a Controlled Substance. The youth who cannot be identified due to provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act is scheduled to appear at the Youth Justice Court in Kirkland Lake on March 6, 2014.

 

 

MOOSONEE OPP LAY NUMEROUS CHARGES ON SUNDAY

(MOOSONEE, ON) – The Moosonee Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to 27 calls for service over the weekend and charged three people with offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and one for driving while under suspension.

On February 9, 2014 the Moosonee OPP responded to a report of a possible impaired driver which had been involved in a minor collision and had since left. Officers located the vehicle and arrested the driver for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The passenger in the motor vehicle was also arrested and a subsequent search revealed a quantity of methamphetamine and Canadian currency.

Wendell Edwards (19 years old) of Attawapiskat, Ontario was charged with the following:

-       Impaired operation of a motor vehicle

-       Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood

The passenger, Rodney Iserhoff (34 years old), of Schumacher, Ontario was charged with the following:

-       Possession of a schedule I substance of the purpose of trafficking

-       Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000

On February 9, 2014 the Moosonee OPP responded to a complaint of an intoxicated male that was attempting to remove his vehicle from a ditch. Officers located the male and subsequently arrested him.

Ivan Iahtail (35 years old) of Attiwapiskat, Ontario is charged with the following:

-       Care or control of a motor vehicle while impaired

-       Care or control of a motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood

On February 9, 2014 members of the Moosonee OPP as well as members of the James Bay Ambulance Service responded to a report of an assault on Wavey Crescent. As a result of the investigation a male from Fort Albany, Ontario was charged with the following:

-       Assault (spousal)

-       Fail to comply with an officer in charge undertaking

The identity of the male is not being released to protect the identity of the victim.

In the early hours of February 10, 2014 the Moosonee OPP responded to a report of an intoxicated male outside of a residence. Investigation revealed that the male was wanted in Timmins by both the Timmins Police Service and the South Porcupine OPP. Trevor Ashamock (22 years old) of Fort Albany, Ontario  was arrested on the strength of those warrants and was turned over to the South Porcupine OPP.

Both accused in relation to the impaired driving occurrences have been released on promises to appear while the male charged with assault has been held for bail in Timmins.
