A driver has been charged with a Street Racing offence contrary to the Highway Traffic Act stemming from an event on August 6th.

Yesterday afternoon, an OPP officer with the Highway Safety Division had occasion to observe a 1997 Ford pickup truck allegedly travelling at a speed of 132 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone on Hwy 144 in McKeown Twp. (south of Timmins).

The driver, a 54 yr old woman, has been charged and served with a Summons requiring her to attend Provincial Court in Timmins on September 12th to answer to the charge laid against her.

Additionally, the vehicle has been impounded for 7 days and her driver’s licence has been suspended for 7 days.

The South Porcupine OPP Detachment Commander S/Sgt Brent Cecchini adds “All motorists must understand that the obligation to be safe and responsible while behind the wheel rests squarely on their shoulders.  Enhancing highway safety remains a top priority with the South Porcupine OPP.  This is achievable by means of a partnership between law enforcement and the motoring public focused on responsible, safety oriented use of motor vehicles on area highways.

Area OPP Traffic Sergeant Roy Onlock echoes these sentiments by commenting

“Motorists who insist on driving at high rates of speed can rightfully expect a prompt and strict response from OPP officers who diligently patrol area roadways.”
