Timmins drivers were careful and responsible over the Thanksgiving weekend, with a relatively low number of traffic charges laid.

Timmins Police laid 29 traffic charges over the long weekend; only one of which was for impaired driving. Officers were extra vigilant over the four-day span as the Timmins Police Service participated in the nationwide Operation Impact campaign.

“These numbers are great for us, we’re very happy with them,” said Traffic Sergeant Alan Richardson. “Thanksgiving is typically a time for celebration so to have only the one impaired driving charge, it’s very encouraging.”

Included in the 29 charges laid were:

- 2 for driving without a permit - 2 for driving while using a handheld communication device - 8 for speeding - 1 for failing to properly wear seat belt - 4 for failing to stop at a red light

Over the weekend, officers focused on the “Big Four” factors resulting in serious injury or death – aggressive driving, distracted driving, seatbelt use and impaired driving.
