The Philippines declares state of calamity

As the Philippines recovers from the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, Premier Kathleen Wynne released the following statement announcing Ontario's support for relief efforts.

"Like so many people around the world, I have watched the unfolding tragedy in the Philippines with great sorrow. To those who have lost or are still waiting to hear from loved ones, I want you to know our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

As the extent of the devastation becomes apparent, it is also clear that the people of the Philippines need our help to recover in the weeks and months ahead.

That's why the Ontario Government will contribute $1 million to the Red Cross to help their relief efforts. And in the days to come, we will prepare to provide other supports as requested. Ontario has a long, proud history of coming to the aid of people around the world in times of disaster and we are ready to do so again.

Here at home, so many people - particularly those with friends and family in the Philippines - have come together to see what they can do to help. I want to thank the many community and church groups for their efforts.

I also want to encourage everyone to contribute to the efforts of the Red Cross with their personal donations."
