Ontario reports record 4,812 new COVID cases today

The province reported 3,151 recoveries, 25 deaths, and 203 new hospitalizations in today's update

Public Health Ontario has reported a record 4,812 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 16).

Today's report includes 3,151 recoveries and 25 new deaths.  

The deaths reported today include two people between 40 and 59 years old, 13 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 10 people over the age of 79 years old.

The province has reported 203 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and 53 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The April 16 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 39,977 active cases, which is up from 38,341 yesterday. 
  • 1,955 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,932 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 701 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (up from 659 yesterday) and 480 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 442 reported yesterday)
  • The province reported 64,304 tests were processed yesterday resulting in an 8.3 per cent positivity rate. 
  • Another 38,815 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 13.3 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 4,812 new cases reported today, 1,469 are from Toronto, 851 cases are from Peel, 491 are from York Region, and 101 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • The new cases reported today include 831 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,890 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,376 people between 40 and 59 years old, 616 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 94 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 115,634 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 15, which is up from 105,430 doses on April 14.
  • As of 6 p.m. on April 15, the province reported 3,644,038 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 341,933 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 408,383 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 360,742 recoveries and 7,664 deaths, of which 3,909 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,747.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 187.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is an increase of 31.1 per cent from last week (March 31 to April 6). 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 291 cases, rate of 254.3 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 288 cases. There are 48 known active cases, including one person who is temporarily in the region but the case is not part of the local numbers. There have been 12 confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant of concern. Five tests have screened positive for a variant of concern but the strain is not known yet. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 325 cases, rate of 250.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 326 cases. There are 21 known active cases. There have been 34 confirmed cases of the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7) variant, and 27 confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are 12 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 446 cases, rate of 534.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 448 cases. There are 64 known active cases. There have been five confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) strain and two confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are three tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 1,778 cases, rate of 893.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,796 cases. There are 206 known active cases. There have been 122 confirmed UK (B.1.1.7) variants of concern. There are 473 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 136 cases, rate of 416 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 137 cases. There are six known active cases. There have been 22 confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant and one case of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 786 cases, rate of 896.5 per 100,000 people. There are 50 known active cases. There have been 12 confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant. There are 15 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. 
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 2,995 cases, rate of 1997.2 per 100,000 people.  The health unit has reported 2,992 cases. There are 61 known active cases. There are nine tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet.

Further restrictions are expected to be announced later today. Premier Doug Ford is slated to make an announcement at 2:30 p.m. Village Media will live stream the announcement.
