A new Extendicare Kapuskasing will see the number of beds offered double.

The Ontario government has announced adding 68 new beds and upgrading 60 beds at the Kapuskasing facility. The home has also proposed designating 32 of the beds for Francophone residents.

“Our government has a plan to fix long-term care and a key part of that plan is building modern, safe, and comfortable homes for our seniors,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Long-Term Care, in a news release.

“This home is an example of the action our government is taking to support the Francophone community with care that is tailored to their cultural and linguistic needs. When this new building in Kapuskasing is completed, 128 residents will have a new place to call home, near their family and friends.”

Extendicare Kapuskasing is already a designated agency under the French Language Services Act.

Along with the long-term care beds, the home will provide services for mental health, behavioural support and palliative care.

Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2023, with residents moving in the spring of 2025.
