The Porcupine Health Unit is now offering an online prenatal education course that is available to all pregnant women and their support person throughout the district.

“Prenatal education programs are an important part of prenatal care and support during pregnancy,” explains Melissa Stewart, a public health nurse at the Porcupine Health Unit. “Prenatal education has many benefits for the mom, her support person and the baby. Some of these benefits include gaining knowledge and skills to have a healthy pregnancy, learning the importance of informed decision-making and enhancing communication between partners about pregnancy and parenting.”

“An online course provides an opportunity for prenatal education to women and their support person in situations where they cannot attend face-to-face group classes,” says Stewart.

“Some of the reasons that women may have to complete the online course can include lack of group prenatal classes in their community due to low enrolment, scheduling conflicts, lack of time and lack of transportation. There are also others who just have preference for online learning and we are pleased to now be able to offer them that choice,” adds Stewart.

The course is free of charge and is offered in both French and English. Interested participants can call 1-800-461-1818 or visit our website to register.

The Porcupine Health Unit is located in Northeastern Ontario, serving the entire Cochrane District and Hornepayne, in Algoma District. The main office is located in Timmins, Ontario, with branch offices in Cochrane, Hearst, Hornepayne, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Matheson, Moosonee and Smooth Rock Falls.
