OPP RELEASE OPERATION IMPACT RESULTS

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued thousands of tickets and investigated the loss of two lives during Operation Impact, a Canada-wide road safety campaign aimed at saving lives and reducing serious injuries on roads through increased public awareness and enforcement of road safety laws.

The annual campaign was underway over the Thanksgiving Long Weekend and during that time, officers educated road users and enforced traffic laws associated with the “Big 4” causal factors in motor vehicle collisions: impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and lack of seat belt use.

In OPP jurisdictions, officers laid a total of 4,582 speeding charges and 48 stunt racing charges for driving over 50 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit.  Other charges during the campaign include 204 distracted driving charges, 634 seat belt charges, 79 impaired driving charges and 916 other moving violations.

The OPP also issued 65 roadside Warn Range suspensions to drivers whose Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) was between .05 and .08 (this means there is 50 to 80 milligrams of alcohol in every 100 millilitres of blood).  Those who were issued Warn Range Suspensions immediately had their driver’s licence suspended at the roadside for three days.

The OPP reported two road fatalities and one off-road vehicle fatality in OPP jurisdictions over the long weekend.  Sadly, the two road fatalities involved a 21-month old child and his 7 year-old brother, both of whom were killed after being struck by a vehicle in the town of Parry Sound on Friday, October 11 (2013).

OPP RESPOND TO BARRICADED PERSON CALL

(KAPUSKASING, ON) -In the late afternoon hours of Sunday, October 13, 2013, Kapuskasing Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a barricaded person call on Brunetville Rd. in Kapuskasing.

Following a cursory investigation by the responding officers, the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and a member of the OPP Crisis Negotiation Team were dispatched to the involved residence. The specialized OPP units performed the containment of the residence and negotiated the barricaded male’s safe and voluntary surrender.

The 27 year old male from Kapuskasing was subsequently apprehended for his own safety and transported to the Kapuskasing Sensenbrenner Hospital for medical assessment.

As a result of the investigation, no charges have been laid and names and further details will not be disclosed due to the nature of the event.

OPP INVESTIGATE AMBULANCE AND PICK UP TRUCK CRASH

(COCHRANE, ON) –Shortly before noon on Friday, October 11, 2013, the Cochrane Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision involving an ambulance and a pickup truck on Highway 11, just west of Cochrane.

Once at the scene, police observed the involved Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics who had sustained minor injuries during the crash, providing emergency care to the three passengers and driver of the toppled over pickup truck. Other EMS units along with the Cochrane Fire Department were dispatched to assist with the scene. The Jaws of Life were used to extricate the trapped female driver from the damaged pickup truck.

Police investigation revealed that the westbound GMC pickup truck occupied by a 38 year old female driver from Cochrane and her three young children ranging from 11 months old to 17 years of age, made a left hand turn into the path of the eastbound oncoming ambulance vehicle prior to the collision.

All injured occupants were subsequently transported to the Cochrane Lady Minto hospital by ambulance and treated for injuries ranging in severity. The five year old female passenger was subsequently air lifted to an Ottawa hospital and the 17 year old male was transported to the Sudbury hospital, both suffering from serious injuries. The 11 month old female infant and 38 year old female driver did not sustain life threatening injuries and are in stable condition.

The two involved paramedics were treated for minor injuries and have since been released from the hospital.

Members with the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation (TTCI) are currently investigating the cause of the collision and charges are pending completion of the investigation.

OPP WRAP-UP FALL SEAT BELT CAMPAIGN

Not Wearing Seat Belt a Causal Factor in Three Road Deaths

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has wrapped up its fall seat belt campaign and has tallied up its statistics for the annual campaign which ran from September 26 to October 13, 2013.

Sadly, lack of seat belt use was a factor in three people losing their lives in road crashes in OPP jurisdictions during this year’s campaign.  According to the OPP, fatalities and injuries in which lack of seat belt use is a factor are among the most preventable of deaths on highways and roads.

The OPP also reported laying 4,229 seat belt charges throughout the province during the 18-day campaign. Officers who carried out seat belt checks and public education in support of the campaign were disappointed to see so many people still not wearing seat belts in light of how clear they have been about the role seat belts play in saving lives.

As part of their campaign, the OPP posted an important YouTube video about Jennifer Walker who, two days after receiving an OPP warning for not wearing her seat belt, was involved in a car crash that would have probably ended her life had she not heeded the officer’s warning and decided to make buckling up part of her driving routine.  According to Jennifer, she was extremely thankful that the officer pulled her over that day and gave her a warning that she attributes to saving her life.

The OPP is reminding the public that while the campaign is over, they enforce seat belt laws throughout the year in their ongoing efforts to raise awareness about seat belt use.
