The Ontario Government will provide Northern College with $969,000 to undertake heating plant upgrades at its four campuses, in Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Haileybury and Moosonee.

“This funding will enable Northern College to contribute to the government’s overall strategy to reduce carbon emissions, part of the Ontario Climate Change Action Plan," said Northern College President and CEO, Dr. Fred Gibbons.

The Climate Change Action Plan and carbon market form the backbone of Ontario's strategy to cut greenhouse gas pollution by 80 per cent by 2050, while investing in programs that help Ontario families and businesses save money and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

In November 2017, Ontario issued a call for proposals from publicly-assisted colleges and universities for innovative approaches to increase campus sustainability.

“Not only will this funding contribute in a tangible way to reducing our carbon footprint, but concurrently it also allows Northern College to replace critical aging infrastructure,” said Gibbons.

Funding will be used to replace aging boilers with high-efficiency boilers and furnaces as well as installing new building control systems used in heating its campus and residence buildings.

Colleges throughout Ontario responded to the provincial call for proposals that will see the undertaking of major building renovations and retrofits on Ontario’s campuses that move the college system toward “net zero” efficiency, where the energy used is no greater than the energy produced.

Colleges will also be developing and delivering new programs to produce more graduates with the professional and technical skills for careers in a low-carbon economy, and developing leading-edge research, in partnership with industries and municipalities, that fosters innovation and the commercialization of new low-carbon technologies.
