TIMMINS, ON: The Northern College Student Association is gearing up to participate in the launch of the Yellow Umbrella Project – an initiative led by The College Student Alliance (CSA), in partnership with colleges across Ontario. The campaign aims to bring awareness to mental health in post-secondary institutions. The Yellow Umbrella Project is a follow-up to last year’s mental health initiative, #Blue2013, which received national attention.

The Yellow Umbrella Project is a week-long initiative with a lasting effect. The campaign  launched October 28th at 13 colleges and 18 student associations across Ontario and will run until November 1st, 2013 and will be promoted through various social media platforms with the tag #YUP. Students and staff alike are welcome to participate in the various promotions taking place. Promotional items such as stress balls and umbrellas will be delivered to all campuses, and information cards boasting the campaign’s social media tag, #YUP, will be handed out.

“Our students have a lot to look forward to during this week long initiative. We have numerous activities planned to engage the college community and get people thinking and talking about student mental health,” says Charles Shih, President of the Timmins Campus Northern College Student Association. “We’re looking forward to having our Student Association and the College Student Alliance work together to raise awareness of mental health in post-secondary education.”

“We’re very excited to see the effect of this year’s campaign on campuses across Ontario,” says Curtis Bell, President of The College Student Alliance. “It is so important to our members to not only provide the entertaining portion of the campaign but also the resources that are available to students on campus and in their community.”

Of the participating student associations, this year the Northern College Student Association will be starting off the week with free breakfast for students as well as a Wall of Yellow to entice students to come and see what is going on. Each day of the week there will a different event held by the Northern College Student Association to increase awareness of mental health issues faced by post-secondary students.

The College Student Alliance (CSA) is an advocacy organization, which has been proudly serving Ontario’s college students since 1975. The CSA currently represents 15 colleges and 21 student associations with over 135,000 full-time student members throughout the province.
