TIMMINS, ONT - Northern College is proud to announce that it has exceeded its goal for the Leaders of Tomorrow Campaign, raising $253,500 to support promising youth in our community through entrance scholarships.
The Leaders of Tomorrow Campaign was launched last year, with a goal to raise $250,000 to create an endowment that will sustain the current level of annual entrance scholarships awarded to students in our region, in perpetuity.
Since the launch, a great number of community members, businesses and organizations throughout northeastern Ontario have stepped forward to partner with Northern College and have invested in the Leaders of Tomorrow Campaign.
“We are extremely grateful to all who have generously contributed to our campaign that supports local students in accessing a first-class college education close to home,” said Fred Gibbons, President and CEO of Northern College. “Donors have made a direct impact on the next generation of local leaders and skilled professionals.”
Up to 38 entrance scholarships, valued at $500 each, are awarded annually to a student at each high school and adult learning centre in the Districts of Timiskaming-Cochrane and Timmins-James Bay. The recipients are chosen by their institutions, using the criteria of high academic achievement and demonstrated community involvement. Last year, entrance scholarships encouraged 63 percent of recipients to stay in the region for their post-secondary education.
It takes a community to graduate a student. It is evident that many community members did their part to encourage local youth to harness their potential. Their support of future leaders provides a direct incentive for promising local youth to stay in the north for their education and careers.
