Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Glencore’s Kidd Operations, which will see the college and the mine collaborating to provide high quality training to students and the mining industry through the Northern School of Hard Rock Mining.

The creation of this new initiative was announced in February of this year. The MoU is intended to strengthen and formalize the long-standing positive working relationship between Kidd Operations and Northern College.

“The signing of this MoU signifies the strength of the college’s relationship with industry partners,” said Fred Gibbons, President and CEO of Northern College. “Kidd Operations continues to work in partnership with Northern to deliver onsite modular training to students, providing authentic hands-on skills and experience.”

One of the first programs offered through the partnership includes the Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core program, delivered at the 2,400 training level at the Kidd Operations mine site in Timmins.

The training program is based on the modularized common core training standards and guidelines developed by the Ontario Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development.

This modular training program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to be an underground hard rock miner.

The first cohort of students to complete the 12-week training program graduated today. Regular intakes will continue throughout the year.

“Kidd Operations is pleased to solidify the partnership with Northern College to offer the Underground Hard Rock Miner Common Core program,” said Steve Badenhorst, General Manager of Glencore Kidd Operations. “It is a great initiative and enables us to continue to collaborate with community partners to assist them in providing essential skills training.”
