Northern College and Algoma University are joining forces to scare up funding for local high schools and the college’s bursary foundation with a haunted walk just in time for Halloween.
The Haunted Trail event brings together local high schools, community partners and volunteers to offer a one of a kind Halloween experience encompassing a 1.45 kilometre walking trail right in our backyard, featuring 16 frightful stations, a pumpkin carving contest and corpse café where participants can ease their jitters with seasonal refreshments.
“This is a great opportunity for the college to pick up on an event like this, offer something to the community and open our doors. We’re a community college, we want people to see who we are, come, have fun with us and celebrate Halloween,” stated Nicole Gingras, Northern College’s alumni and foundations development officer. “This is a big event with a lot of moving parts and we knew we couldn’t do it alone, so we decided to reach out to the youth and to the high schools. We want to give them the opportunity to participate in community service learning projects while giving them some insight into what we have to offer here at Northern.”
This spirit of cooperation will place focus on the longstanding partnership between Northern College and Algoma University, with campus representatives working together to create a unique, fun experience designed to shed light on student life and what an education at Northern College’s Timmins Campus has to offer by showcasing community spirit and togetherness.
“By hosting this event here in the college, it gives youth the opportunity to get a bit of a tour, to see that there is nothing overwhelming about post-secondary education, especially so close to home,” stated Emilene Dumoulin, support services coordinator for Algoma University. “I think it’s incredible that we’re able to partner with the college for such a large event, it’s great to show Timmins that Algoma University is committed to this partnership and this community.”
Northern College recognizes the importance of community citizenship, working to create a welcoming and participatory environment that reinforces the community in community college.
“Northern College is proud of its relationship with the community and we see this event as one way to engage area residents in a seasonal, fun orientated, evening that will appeal to young and old alike,” stated Northern College President, Dr. Fred Gibbons. “Residents are invited to join us in costume for a spooktacular evening.”
A community first approach to education is the cornerstone of the College’s partnership with Algoma, both within the classroom and within the community.
“Algoma University is excited to partner with Northern College on this fantastic community event," stated Algoma University President and Vice-Chancellor, Asima Vezina. "We look forward to deepening our partnership with Northern as we continue to build educational pathways for our current and future students. I can't wait to see all the spooky costumes while raising valuable funds for local high school and youth groups!"
The event takes place Oct. 25 and 26 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Northern College’s Timmins Campus and is open to the general public, with free parking available. Admission is $5 per person, or a group rate of $20 for five people. All proceeds will go towards participating local high schools and Northern College’s bursary foundation to be redistributed to current and future students.
