Northeastern Catholic District School Board students and staff from Grades 7-12 will be coming together on November 6 and 7 in Timmins for a two day workshop offered by Harmony Movement. The Student Equity Leadership program offered by the Harmony Movement will empower students to become leaders in their schools and communities.

Students and teachers who attend the two day workshop will be completing a project of their choice to share their new knowledge and skills with their schools and communities.  Students can do one big project as a group or a number of projects individually or in small groups.  The idea behind the final project is for students to take a leadership role in educating others about equity and inclusion.  The Harmony Movement has included a list of projects schools have been involved in:

  • making awareness posters for their school;
  • delivering an assembly or workshop for other students in their own school or feeder schools based on the material they learned in Harmony programming (ideally, this would be planned by the students as much as possible, though we do have some scripts, power point slides and video clips we can share to help with preparation);
  • participants will also receive a Student Equity Workbook with activities they can use in their classrooms or schools to lead discussions about prejudice, discrimination and equity;
  • create a school or community art project such as a mural to celebrate diversity and equity;
  • write a play or skits about equity and inclusion to perform for the class/school/community;
  • invite a guest speaker or speakers to their school to talk about particular issues related to diversity and equity.

John D’Alessandri, St. Joseph School Principal commented “On November 6-7 students from grades 7-12 from across the Northeastern Catholic District School Board will come together at O’Gorman High School for a workshop put on by the Harmony Movement. These school leaders will take part along with their teachers in activities designed to get them to think about what type of project they can do in their schools to make the NCDSB more inclusive and accepting for all of our students. “
