Newmont donation helping groom trails at Kamiskotia (2 photos)

The fall sale for passes launches today

When Kamiskotia Snow Resort opens this season, its trails will be well-groomed.

The Timmins ski hill has bought a new groomer thanks to a donation from Newmont Porcupine. The fall sale for passes is also starting today, and a rebrand will be launched at the annual general meeting in November.

Newmont Porcupine donated $35,000 for the groomer, which is new to the hill, and replaces an older piece of equipment.

“A groomer is an important part of any hill, it provides that beautiful corduroy effect that you see in a lot of photos, and a safe atmosphere for any level of skier,” said Cameron Grant, board of directors chair.

COVID-19 shut down the 2019-2020 ski season early.

For the upcoming season, Grant said they're working closely with the Porcupine Health Unit to make sure everyone has a safe season.

If the hill has to close again, he said people who've bought passes will have "an option to either push that back to the next season or simply hold on to it and look for refunds at that time."

Grant said the board also used the extra downtime to move ahead with exciting initiatives — including a rebrand. That is being launched at the annual general meeting Nov. 21.

Mike Scott, who sits on the board of directors, said they worked with a local designer and are excited to unveil it to the public.

“It’s going to give a fresh new look to the hill and hopefully will complement our expansion into more year-round activities,” said Scott.

A tentative date has also been set for the annual ski and snowboard swap.

It's Oct. 24 and is a chance to buy new and lightly used equipment.
