With a waiting list of people willing to pay, staff is recommending building a new mausoleum at the Timmins Memorial Cemetery.

A staff report for the 100-crypt mausoleum is on the Timmins council agenda for the May 26 meeting.

The recommendation is to have Carrier Mausoleum Construction build it for $640,700 at the Pine Street South cemetery. It would be five units high, with a mix of single, shared, and couch fronts.

"The city has received a few calls for mausoleum crypts and a current wating list of inviduals willing to pay prior to construction has been established. We are confident, once construction begins, more interest will be generated," reads the report from cemetery manager Lynne Grenon.

There is already a 100-crypt mausoleum built in 2002 that has no availability. The cost for the mausoleum has almost doubled since then, with the original piece costing the city $393,986 18 years ago.

In February, a tender was issued by the city for a 50-crypt mausoleum. At $399,700, Carrier Mausoleum, who also built the city's first structure, was the only bid. The city reached back out after the bid was received to ask for pricing for a mausoleum exactly like what was built in 2002.

At 2020 pricing, the city report says a 50-crypt unit would actually cost the city $16,540. It projects a 100-crypt structure would generate $61,636 in additional revenue.

"This additional revenue is calculated after paying the required $175,553.60 into the annual care and maintenance fund and recouping the $640,700 construction cost. By approving the construction of the 100-crypt mausoleum, the city will be able to hold the line on current fees," wrote Grenon.

"Fees will be adjusted, in future years, in an effort to continue to bring the cemetery operations into revenue neutral cost situation for the City as per the recommendation of the KPMG Core Service Review."

Council is meeting virtually May 26 at 6 p.m. You can tune into the meeting here.
