A team from Newmont’s Musselwhite Mine has brought home a third-place win from the 2020 International Mines Rescue Competition.
Delayed because of COVID-19, the 2020 competition took place last week, Sept. 11-16, in Beaver, WV, where teams from around the world competed in a series of trials designed to test their skills and knowledge in mine rescue fundamentals.
The team from Musselwhite, which earned its place at the international event after winning the overall Ontario competition in July, placed third in the high-angle rope rescue.
Musselwhite is a fly-in gold mine operation located about 500 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.
Other Canadian teams placing in the events included Stornoway Diamonds Renard Mine (Quebec), which earned second in mine rescue simulation and third in firefighting, and the Mosaic Potash Esterhazy Mine (Saskatchewan) won second place in first aid.
Diamonds in the Rough (Saskatchewan), a mine rescue team composed entirely of women, won second in high-angle rope rescue and third in theory.
The MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) Mine Emergency Unit, from the United States, was declared the overall winner of the competition.
The next International Mines Rescue Competition will take place in Colombia in 2024.
