NEWS RELEASE

MINISTRY OF COMMUNITY SAFETY AND CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

Ontario is working to improve community safety and better support modern policing operations by updating Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) facilities across the province.

Nine new detachments will be constructed, replacing buildings at the end of their useful lifespan. The new detachments will be located in:

  • Moosonee
  • Fort Frances
  • Hawkesbury
  • Huron County
  • West Parry Sound
  • Manitoulin Island
  • Port Credit
  • Marathon
  • Orillia

Infrastructure Ontario (IO) will be responsible for identifying and preparing sites for the planned development and managing the facility design and construction process.

Ontario is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province's history -- about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and transit.

Since 2015, the province has announced support for more than 475 projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life. To learn more about infrastructure projects in your community, go to Ontario.ca/BuildON.

Investing in community safety is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and help people in their everyday lives.

QUOTES

"Our government is committed keeping Ontarians safe. Renewing these detachments will help the OPP better serve their communities. The new facilities are replacing structures that have exceeded their useful life, and will fully support modern police operations to ensure the safety of our communities and the people who live in them."
 — David Orazietti, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services

"These modern up-to-date facilities will enhance the service OPP officers and civilian staff provide to these communities. This is not an expansion in police services. The new buildings are intended to provide modern, adequately sized detachments for the current level of policing with flexibility for future expansion if necessary. The OPP is pleased to know we will soon be serving these areas from facilities that mirror the professionalism and the dedication of our members."
 — J.V.N. (Vince) Hawkes, Commissioner, Ontario Provincial Police

"Investing in modern OPP facilities reflects our government’s commitment to keeping Ontario’s communities safe. This project will provide economic stimulus by creating and supporting jobs across Ontario."
 — Bob Chiarelli, Minister of Infrastructure
