The national Moose Hide Campaign is being marked for the first time in Timmins this week.

Timmins Native Friendship Centre kind man co-ordinator Pierre Belec explained it’s for Indigenous and non-indigenous men to end violence against women and children.

He said there are systemic things in place promoting the perpetrator instead of helping the victim.

“Violence is big in our communities so we want to make people aware that men have to be allied with our women and our children to end the violence. If we can get more men coming forward and change society we’ll have a better world for everyone; we’ll have better sons, better daughters,” he said.

For the campaign, an event is being held Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Timmins Native Friendship Centre from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

It is open to everyone, and there will be booths, speakers, traditional fires, and a sacred fire.

Belec hopes the event will be held for many years, and will gain traction.
