Ontario is once again providing $6 million to First Nation communities and the Town of Moosonee for winter roads.

In 2021, 3,170 kilometres of temporary snow and ice roads will be built and maintained. The funding can also be used to support special projects such as bridge improvements, maintenance of crossings and other roads, according to the government announcement.

“Winter roads are a critical link to the province’s transportation system for remote First Nation communities in Ontario,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry and Minister of Indigenous Affairs, in a news release.

"With this investment, our government is helping Far North communities with economic development and to plan more effectively for upcoming winter roads seasons."

Moose Cree is receiving $381,457 to connect Moose Cree First Nation to Otter Rapids.

The Town of Moosonee's portion is $23,561 for two ramps needed for the winter road to Moose Factory.

There is also $315,316 for the Weenusk (Peawanuck) winter road to Fort Severn.

The James Bay Winter Road from Moosonee to Attawapiskat via Fort Albany and Kashechewan being operated and managed by Kimesskanamenow LP is receiving $589,443.

This year, the ice road is being built to more robust standards to accommodate increased traffic to haul the remaining equipment and infrastructure from the Victor Mine site.
