As Newmont Mining readies to buy Goldcorp, Timmins has transferred some of the mining rights of the historic McIntyre mine back to the company.

This week, council also renewed its lease with the mining company for the Tisdale transfer station and cleared up minor land transfers.

When Pamour Porcupine Mines transferred the McIntyre Community Centre to the city back in 1981, a report from clerk Steph Palmateer says part of the mining rights were also ‘inadvertently’ transferred. Those rights have been transferred back to Goldcorp.

Council has also approved a new 10-year lease agreement with Goldcorp for the Tisdale waste transfer station. The cost for it is $1.

Portions of roads that had been inadvertently transferred to Goldcorp have been transferred back to the city as well.

Timmins Mayor George Pirie noted that Goldcorp is in the middle of a multi-billion process with Newmont. The historic nuances were noticed and the lawyers wanted them fixed.

The proposed $10-billion merger was announced in January and will create one of the world’s largest mining companies.
