881 blue flags were also planted in the gardens in front of City Hall, each representing a person in our community with an identified learning disability

NEWS RELEASE

CITY OF TIMMINS

Earlier today, Mayor Black was joined by a large group to proclaim the month of October as Learning Disabilities Awareness Month. Everyone in attendance had the same goal of ensuring our community is as inclusive as possible.

The proclamation and flag raise also served to celebrate the first anniversary of the Learning Disabilities Association of Timmins (located at 97 Pine St. S.), providing one-on-one meetings, workshops, an online parent forum, and movie nights.

They also provide an online support group, which will break down the barriers of distance and join parents together from across northern Ontario.

The establishment of the association was an important milestone in supporting children and youth with learning disabilities in the area, and the group continues to build parents’ capacity to improve  their children’s emotional and social skills – attributing its success to community support.

Following the official flag raise, 881 blue flags were also planted in the gardens in front of City Hall, each representing a person in our community with an identified learning disability.
