Mattagami River Water Levels to Rise Over Next 24 to 48 Hours

The Upper Mattagami River Water Management Committee has updated the Flood Warning for that portion of the Mattagami River flowing through the City of Timmins.

The Upper Mattagami River Water Management Committee has updated the Flood Warning for that portion of the Mattagami River flowing through the City of Timmins. A Flood Warning message serves as notification to the general public that flooding is about to occur. The Committee met again today and reports that as a result of the yesterday’s rainfall, water levels on the Mattagami River are expected to rise 12 to 14 inches (30 to 35 centimeters) over the next 24 to 48 hours. These higher water levels are expected to be around well into next week. Although water levels are still high on Porcupine Lake and Kamiskotia Lake, no residences are expected to be affected at this time. In the Upper Mattagami Watershed, Mesomikenda Lake and Peterlong Lake will continue to rise to levels higher than normal for this time of year. Those residents living in the first, second and third flood stage zones will again be contacted by Timmins Police Services to ensure they are aware of the situation. Timmins residents and businesses located near the Mattagami River are encouraged to monitor the conditions that are developing and to take the appropriate actions to protect their property.

Those residents wishing more information on the availability of sand and sandbags as well as possible road closures are asked to visit the City of Timmins website. (www.timmins.ca) Everyone is reminded that venturing out on the water is very dangerous this time of year. The water is cold, fast-flowing and carries with it debris that can easily overturn a boat. The Committee will be meeting on a continuous basis and provide regular updates. The general public is asked to visit Mattagami Region Conservation Authority’s website (http://mrca.timmins.ca) for any updates.
