A flood warning for the Mattagami River has been extended.

The Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA) first issued a flood warning for the Mattagami River and Porcupine Lake April 26.

While the warning for the Mattagami is in effect until Tuesday, May 14, the alert for Porcupine Lake and Porcupine River has been downgraded to a flood watch.

"Flooding is occuring in low-lying areas along the Mattagami River and water levels in the area may continue to rise in response to warmer weather and associated snow melt, along with recent precipitation," reads the MRCA warning.

"Residents in flood prone areas near the Mattagami River should anticipate further water level increases over the next few days. The exact extent of the flooding is difficult to predict at this time and will depend on the weather. The Flood Advisory Committee continues to meet on a regular basis to review watershed conditions and forecasts."

Because of the flooding, Norman Street is closed south of Cedar Meadows.

Access to the hotel is via the Lafleur Street bridge.

There are barriers up for the closed section, and so far Timmins Police have charged five people for driving on the closed roadway

Sand and sand bags are available at the Mountjoy Arena and Confederation Sports Centre in Timmins.

"Residents are reminded to remove unsecured material and equipment from shoreline areas and be prepared with a household emergency plan should a flood emergency be declared," according to the MRCA. "Parents are again asked to let their children know about the dangers of playing in and around lakes, rivers, streams and flooded areas."

A Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) flood watch also remains in effect for the Timmins District until Friday, May 17.

"Residents in and around Minisinakwa Lake including low-lying areas of Gogama should keep a close watch on conditions, regularly check for updated messages and stay away from fast moving rivers and streatms. Residents are advised that there is a potential risk of looding in the coming days," reads the MNRF notice.

"The ministry is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions. Further updates will be issued as appropriate."
