Last Friday, Timmins residents and visitors alike were able to participate in the Bike Rodeo hosted by Timmins Police Service and the Porcupine Health Unit.

The local Canadian Tire was a generous supporter of the program with donations of space to host the event as well as four bicycles and helmets which Bike Rodeo participants were entered into a draw to win.

Throughout the day, Constable Rick Lemieux taught participants about the rules of the road, proper hand signals to use while riding and the importance of always wearing their helmet.

According to Lemieux, “wearing a helmet reduced injuries by 80 percent” and there is a legal requirement for any cyclist under the age of 18 to wear a helmet while riding.

Failure to wear a helmet when required is met with an $80 fine.

Once a participant had completed the session, they were able to enter into a draw for one of the four bicycles.

The draw was conducted at the end of the day with the winners gathering at Canadian Tire today, to be presented with their new bike.

Constable Rick Lemieux of the Timmins Police Service and Canadian Tire Store Manager, Al Racette were joined by Timmins Police Service Youth Ambassador, Amanda Tschupruk as they present prizes of a new bike and helmet to the winners from Friday’s Bike Rodeo draw.

The winners of the draw were: Alyssa Bert, Brayden Girard and Isablle Godda and Jacob Pleuffe.

Alyssa, Brayden and Isabell are now the proud owners of new bikes and helmets and all three are looking forward to being stopped by a Timmins Police officer as part of the Helmets On campaign so that they can be rewarded with SportsPlex of Laser Tag tickets for properly wearing their helmet while riding.

Jacob was unable to attend today’s presentation but arrangements are being made to ensure that he can receive his new bike and helmet soon.
