TIMMINS SKI RACERS

Over the weekend, the Timmins Ski Racers (TSR) travelled to Mount Antoine in Mattawa and Mont-Video in Val D’or to capture a total of eight medals.
The U-14 and U-16 athletes, under the direction of team head coach Cameron Grant, participated in Mattawa’s fourth annual Home Hardware Classic where the ski team swept the podium.
On the Saturday in the women’s slalom, U-14 Kendra Rusenstrom took the gold, while U-16 Sophie Harterre placed third. In the men’s slalom both U-14 Cameron Nycz and U-16 Jamie Brain managed to capture third place.
As Sunday morning temperatures dropped to –40 Celsius, Sophie Harterre finished the women’s giant slolam in second place, while Cameron Nycz topped the men’s list with a gold medal and the fastest time. U-16 Eli Taylor also took home the bronze totaling six medals for the race in Mattawa.
“The team represented Timmins well,” said Cameron Grant, “they have trained very hard and in extremely cold temperatures to take the podium today. They certainly deserve the congratulations and I am proud to continue working with these dedicated young athletes.”
In Val D’or, U-12 Myriam Levesque travelled to Mont-Video for their annual ski race. There, Levesque cleaned up just as much as her senior athletes, bringing home two gold medals for Saturday and Sunday’s giant slolam.
“While we train as a team, we don’t always get to race as a team,” adds Grant. “We train extensively as a unit so that when we head out to separate races, the athletes can still focus on their core training skills.”
The Timmins Ski Racers will be on home turf this coming weekend as they prepare to host Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, and Elliot Lake for the Boreal Cup at Kamiskotia.
