Local firefighters dispatched to Matagami Mine fire

Firefighters from five fire departments fight stubborn blaze for 24 hours

At 8:05 p.m. on Friday, May 25, in the town of Matagami, the northern part of Quebec a fire was reported at the Matagami mine. The fire originated on the concentrator roof and continued to spread.

The initial response began by the mine employees and the local Matagami fire department as they worked to extinguish the fire further assistance from nearby fire departments (Amos, Val-D’or, and Rouyn-Noranda) responded to help put out with the burning building.

The mine company requested more resources to fight the blaze and called upon the mine emergency response team from its related Glencore mine site in Timmins. Six of the mine’s employees who are also Timmins volunteer firefighters flew the next day to help out. Twenty- four hours later the fire was extinguished.

The Matagami mine is 430 km away from the City of Timmins, we are proud that our firefighters were able to provide this type of assistance to another mine. The Timmins Fire Department is pleased to know that our firefighters are able to provide this type of assistance to the mining industry.

The Timmins Fire Department is a composite Fire Department that operates seven Fire Stations; five Volunteer Stations, one Composite Station and one Airport Station. The Fire Department is equipped with a total of 21 pieces of apparatus, 140 Volunteers Firefighters and 34 Career Firefighters.
