With the calendar turning to December, the festive season is now seemingly underway. Each passing day sees a few more houses adorned with colourful lights.

The City of Timmins is taking things a step further this year new initiatives, including a community tree lighting ceremony which will take place this Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Hollinger Park.

The ceremony was inspired by a letter sent to the city by a young resident, Miah Yuan Corbeil.

She felt that Timmins needed a focal point for the holiday season. Something everyone could see and enjoy.

She suggested Hollinger Park, which is essentially in the centre of the community.

After a discussion during a recent council meeting, the idea was unanimously approved.

No councillor chose to play the role of Grinch this year.

Corbeil will be joining Mayor Steve Black for the official plug-in.

There will be free hot chocolate provided to the first 200 attendees, provided by Tim Horton's.

Midnight Express will be playing Christmas music from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

City residents are invited to bring ornaments and decorations for the tree.

Another new initiative this year is the Christmas Community Decorating Contest.

An idea meant to encourage holiday spirit and creativity.

Homes and businesses in the city can submit their entries by emailing their name, address, photos, and contact number to [email protected]

No specifics have been announced, but prize packages from Porter Airlines, Timmins Rock Hockey Club, Cedar Meadows, Downtown Timmins BIA, Timmins Chamber of Commerce and the City of Timmins are being prepared.

The deadline for entry is December 21.

The top three business and residential entry winners will also be honoured at a city council meeting in January.
