Now there are three. The Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing (AMK) federal Liberal Association has chosen a candidate who is being asked to derail New Democrat MP Carol Hughes' three-term rule in the riding.
With Hughes seeking a fourth straight term as MP in the vast riding later this year, the local Liberal Association has selected Heather Wilson of Espanola to run against her.
It'll be official when the Liberals gather in Spanish on Saturday, June 1, at 2 p.m. to make her nomination official in a meeting at the town's Four Seasons Complex.
Wilson says she's confident she can take on the sitting MP. She says she wants to make the riding relevant in government matters. She also says she wants to make the area friendly to both business and the people.
It's Wilson's second try for an MP's seat in the House of Commons. Last time out in the 2015 federal election, Wilson ran second for the Liberals to Hughes, losing out in a 16,516 to 14,111 vote count.
The Canadian Conservative Party announced earlier this month that Manitoulin Island municipal administrator Dave Williamson will be that party's standard bearer in the riding in this fall's election.
Still to come among the major parties, a candidate announcement from the Green Party of AMK to round out the slate as voters plan go to the polls in the federal election on Monday, Oct. 21.
