Kirkland Lake man charged with trafficking

KIRKLAND LAKE - On Monday, May 13, 2019, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Region Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), the North East Region OPP Canine Unit (K9) and members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the OPP, executed a search warrant on Kirkland Street in the Town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario.  

As a result of the search warrant, police seized drugs suspected to be heroin (Purple H), cocaine, methamphetamine, opioids, illicit cannabis and Canadian currency. The estimated total street value of the seizure is $6,300.   

Police arrested the accused on May 21, 2019, and he was found to be in possession of additional drugs that are suspected to be heroin (Purple H) and cocaine.  

As a result of the police investigation, James Matthews, age 56, of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, is charged with the following:  

  •  Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Heroin (two counts), contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Opioid, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA,         
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Opioid, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA,
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA, and
  • Possession of Illicit Cannabis, contrary to section 8(1)(b) of the Cannabis Act (CA).

The accused was remanded into custody pending bail and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Temiskaming Shores by video, on May 24, 2019.
