Ken Pye hits it out of the 'park'

New figure-8 skating track a big hit, say local leaders

Ice skaters of all ages enjoyed warmer temperatures to skate on the natural ice surface at Sk8te Hollinger in Timmins

It was a great day for a family skate at Hollinger Park's new figure eight rink Wednesday with temperatures hovering in the single digits below zero in the early evening.

A number of ice skaters young and old gathered to thank local business leaders for pooling their resources to build Sk8te Hollinger natural ice surface for the people of Timmins to enjoy.

The event, organized by the Timmins Chamber of Commerce, was officially titled Business on Ice.

Councillor Michael Doody was on hand to provide a certificate of appreciation recognizing the efforts of Ken Pye from the Tree Bandits who spearheaded the building of the ice surface by providing the water trucks that were used to build the figure 8 ice surface.

Discarded Christmas trees were diverted from the city dump and arranged around the skating track to provide a wind break.

Councillor Doody also recognized the efforts of Jeremy Wilson of Great White Electrical for providing the electrical work that made possible the night lighting of the ice track and the lighting of the mobile trailer that is used as a change room.

“It is a great pleasure to be here on behalf of Mayor Steve Black, council and the entire Timmins community to say thank you,” Councillor Doody said. “You know it’s amazing what we can do when some people have an idea, how to dream and you bring the right people to the table and what you have is something like Hollinger Sk8te 8.”

“It really adds to the quality of life of the community,” he added.

“Ken really hit it out of the park on this,” said Jeremy Wilson. “He has done a great job keeping the rink going and all the volunteers that helped.”

The many other contributors were also recognized with certificates of appreciation for their contribution to Sk8te Hollinger.

“I would like to thank everyone who has helped me out with this project no matter how big or how small every contribution was important for the success of this rink,” said Ken Pye.
