During the 2019-2020 school year, Kapuskasing District High School (KDHS) participated in the Staples Superpower You School Contest. In May, 2020, KDHS received the great news that the school had been selected as a winner for the 2020 contest, winning $20,000 to go towards the purchase of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) equipment and materials.

“We are so proud to be one of 20 recipients of this grant in Cananda, and the only recipient in Northern Ontario. This is a wonderful testament to the dedication of the students and Mr. Swain to this initiative”, said Kevin McRae, Principal at KDHS.

Since the start of the 2020-2021 school year, KDHS and the lead teacher on this initiative, Randy Swain, have worked hard to purchase and set up the STEM equipment to continue to support the ecological programs at the school. This new equipment includes a state-of-the-art 3D printer, iMac and a digital microscope.

This equipment will support the continued growth of the Food for Thought program at KDHS, where the school grows food indoors, year-round. In addition to food science and urban farming practices, students will now have the opportunity to learn more about robotics related to this industry.

“Students are excited to expand their work in projects that support the environment and the sustainability of food sources. I’m proud of their leadership and commitment to long-term solutions for our planet”, said Randy Swain, Teacher at KDHS.

At the Oct. 21, 2020 Board Meeting, Mr. McRae and Mr. Swain presented the projects in place through this program at the school and the new equipment purchased, thanks to the support of Staples Canada. “It was great for the Board of Trustees to hear more about this initiative and the amazing work taking place at KDHS. On behalf of the Board, I commend the school, Mr. Swain and all the students involved”, said Chair Brush.

The Staples Superpower your Schools contest is presented in collaboration with EcoKids and Earth Day Canada. The application process focuses on schools’ innovative environmental efforts and the school community involvement in these initiatives.
