It's National Indigenous Peoples Day! Here's what's happening in Timmins

A full day of activities is planned for National Indigenous Peoples Day.

In Timmins, there has been a celebration of Indigenous culture happening all week at Participark.

Today there is a special slate of events planned in the city. It kicked off at 5:30 a.m. with a sunrise ceremony. 

The flags of the Mattagami First Nation, Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Metis Nation of Ontario are being raised at city hall at 11 a.m. After the ceremony, there will be a unity walk from downtown to Participark.

Other activities throughout the day are:

Noon - opening remarks

Noon - 5 p.m. - Activities, games, vendors, inflatables and more in the park. There will also be drumming throughout the day with the Northern Spirit Drum Group and Asnishnabe Kwe.

1 p.m. - Bannock cooking demonstration, fire keeper/sacred fire teaching with John Ross Tapis, musicians Vern Cheechoo and Lawrence Martin, and Sue Prince of OPG will be talking about the importance of water.

2 p.m. - Rose Iserhoff will be doing a seven grand father and teepee teaching.

3 p.m. - games, potato dance, cake, moose and goose calling contest

The day is wrapping up at 5 p.m.
