The mercury dropped the lowest it's been in 62 years this morning.

Temperatures at the Timmins airport dipped to -7.5 C, setting a new record-low temperature for May 4. The previous record was set in 1958 when it was -7.2.

Kapuskasing also registered in the record books as the mercury dipped to -7.8 C. The previous record in that community was also set in 1958 and was -7.2 C.

According to Environment Canada, the drop in temps was due to a cold-air mass over northeastern Ontario.

"Many more record lows are likely on Tuesday across northeastern Ontario as the arctic air mass becomes more established over the region," reads an Environment Canada statement.

It also notes that these records are tentative and could be broken later in the day.
