Workplace Donor Drive for Organ and Tissue Donation Registration

The Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) launched “Trillium Tuesdays”, a month long organ and tissue donation workplace drive with the Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN).

Every Tuesday TADH employees will be asked to register to be an organ and tissue donor at beadonor.ca/tadh and encourage their friends and family to be as well.

“Trillium Gift of Life Network is making it easy for us to play a vital part in saving lives in Ontario”, said Roger Walker, President and CEO, Timmins and District Hospital. “Our participation in this initiative is a great way to engage everyone in a cause that’s meaningful yet doesn’t require a large time or financial commitment.”

Organ donation in Ontario has tremendous support, but there is a lack of follow-through on intent.

While 80 percent of Ontarians say that giving consent for organ and tissue donation in advance is very important to them, fewer than 25 percent have actually registered.

“It only takes two minutes to register consent, and just one donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of up to 75 others through tissue donation”, said Kim Bazinet, Unit Manager, ER and ICU, Timmins and District Hospital. “Our goal is for 100 people to be registered by July 8, 2014; therefore, we’re encouraging all TADH employees to register online and follow our progress by visiting our campaign page at beadnor.ca/tadh.

The workplace registration drive initiative was designed to address this disconnect between intention and action.

Engaging with Ontarians where they work, gives them the opportunity and inspiration to follow through on their intent.

“Encouraging more Ontarians to register as organ and tissue donors is critically important because too many Ontarians die before receiving the organ transplant they need,” said Ronnie Gavsie, President and CEO of Trillium Gift of Life Network. “When we launched beadonor.ca in 2011, we made it easier for Ontarians to register their consent. Now, by bringing this awareness into the workplace, we are making it even easier for workplaces like the Timmins and District Hospital to engage their employees and to make a difference in the lives of Ontarians.”

The Timmins and District Hospital is a level C, fully accredited referral and teaching hospital serving the residents of the City of Timmins and Cochrane District as well as the adjoining areas of the Temiskaming, Sudbury and Algoma districts.

The 151 bed hospital offers a full range of medical, surgical, critical care, maternity, newborn, pediatric, long- term care and mental health services as well extensive health education and district services.

TADH is dedicated to providing health care services that are consistent with the needs of our community and catchment area.

Trillium Gift of Life Network is a not-for-profit agency of the Government of Ontario and is responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating and supporting organ and tissue donation for transplantation across Ontario and improving the system so that more lives can be saved.
