Bell and Eastlink commit to offering Habs games in French in the North

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus has been dealing with frustrated hockey fans who have been unable to watch Montreal Canadien games in French since the loss of the service by CBC.

But following calls by northern MPs, a solution has been worked out.

In the Timmins and Sudbury regions, the games will be available through a package on Eastlink TV and now through a Bell Satellite TV package that deals with the new NHL TV rights and blackout regions.

Angus says he is pleased that the games are available.

"My colleague Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt) has been on this issue from the beginning. People love hockey in the north and I’ve learned that you don’t mess with Hab fans.”

The black out of the games had occurred when the NHL mistakenly assumed that the northern Ontario was more interested in Toronto games.

Angus said the cable networks heard the message loud and clear.

“It seems like the confusion around the new broadcast arrangement is settling and I am glad to see the cable companies are finding solutions for the fans. I understand there are a few areas where the technology needed to provide this package doesn’t exist, but we hope that is fixed sooner than later. People work hard and like to relax with the game of their choice.”

Angus says if people have questions, they should call their cable providers.
