Highway 11 open after forest fire closure

HEARST – On May 23, 2016, the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) closed Highway 11 from Hearst, Ontario to Longlac, Ontario to address a public safety concern due to forest fires along the highway.

Two large fires were identified west of the Town of Hearst.

Several evacuations took place for precautionary reasons and no injuries were reported.

Fire crews from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) are still actively working to combat the fires in our area.

The OPP, the MNRF, Ontario Hydro and the Trans Canada Pipe Line (TCPL) worked closely together to ensure public safety.

The highway is now open in both directions and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
