High-flying action in Iroquois Falls this weekend

Keep your eyes on the sky Saturday for the Canadian military parachute team's demonstration

Keep your eyes on the sky in Iroquois Falls this weekend.

The SkyHawks, Canada's military parachute demonstration team, is heading to the north for a performance on Saturday, June 3 at 1 p.m.

To help commemorate the 100th anniversary of Iroquois Falls Secondary School, the team is putting on a 25-minute aerial acrobatic show, said Capt. Pierre-Alexandre Dufour.

“Usually people, what they think of a parachute team is not at all what we do. It’s really action-packed and the narrator does a really good job of entertaining the crowd and there’s music. After that, the cool part, from my side, is always to be able to see the smiles that we put on faces and get to meet people, get to talk to them, take pictures. Usually kids really, really enjoy our shows,” he said.

For the Iroquois Falls show, the team is jumping from a Skyvan aircraft and landing on the Abitibi Golf Club. Dufour said there's a viewing area on Synagogue Avenue, but noted that people will be able to see it from any of the surrounding streets.

The show includes colourful smoke, massive flags and daring manoeuvres that see the members bring their parachutes in close proximity to each other.

"It’s very nice visuals in the sky and once we land on the ground, people will be more than welcome to come get pictures with us while we pack our parachutes,” said Dufour.

If anyone has questions about the military, it's also an opportunity to talk with people currently enlisted.

"We’ve got people from the air force, the navy, the army who have a wide variety of jobs and experience. So it’s interesting also for people to learn about that,” he said.
