People are being encouraged to don orange this weekend.

Sept. 30 has been proclaimed Orange Shirt Day in Timmins.

Kristin Murray explained that it’s a time to honour people who attended residential schools, and those who didn’t make it home.

“There was a lady by the name of Phyllis who attended a residential school, but she recalls her story of being given an orange shirt by her family and then going to a residential school they took that from her. So her recollection was really about that and she wanted to just honour and be able to speak to the incidents that happened, but in a way that created awareness and not so much about anger, but more like reconciliation,” she said.

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre is also hosting a walk Friday, Sept. 28. It starts at 10:30 a.m. at the centre at 179 Kirby Ave., and there will be tea and bannock after.
